Hi Folks,

I run a Station through Audio Realm and have had quite a few friends tell me that they cannot pick up the stream through their Apple Mac's either via the website or Audio Realm itself. Is this common or is it just me not setting things up correctly?

Is anyone else experiencing the same problem? I just see a whole bunch of potential listeners lost.

I am using SAMS via SpacialNet with a windows media stream. The player on my site is the free SpacialNet SDK player.

Any help would be appreciated.

Steve Crooks

I believe the Audio Realm player is based on Windows Media Player, so this could be the reason they can't listen. I don't know if a Mac has an equivalent of Win Media Player, or some sort of plugin.

If you're streaming an MP3 stream, you might also supply a link for those users to listen via iTunes, or other media players that MAC may use.

Thanks for the reply. I'm streaming from a windows media server so I guess that's not going to be possible.

Does VLC work on a Mac I wonder?

Steve

Well there are thousands of radio stations that use Windows Media Servers.... I'm sure one of them has a solution. You might do some GOOGLEing and see what the all-wise internet has to say about listening to Windows Media streams on a MAC.

Yes it does and the mac equivalent has all the functions of the windows and linux and BSD/Unix Versions.

Actually almost every opensource Linux/Unix Player is also available in a Version for Mac OS X.

Remember search can be your friend. There is FlipMac for Apple which allows playing of all Windows Media files in Mac no problem including streaming SAM in wma.

While I'm sure there are apps that Mac users can download to listen to WMA streams, the fact is that 99% of users will not download special software to listen to your stream.

For that reason, I believe the only way to avoid the "potential listener loss" is to stream in a format that Mac users can listen to with iTunes, Quicktime or whatever player is built into the OS.

With Windows Media® Components for QuickTime, by Flip4Mac™, you can play Windows Media files (.wma and .wmv) directly in QuickTime Player and view Windows ...

Actually you are helping the listener. The SAM wma stream is only one of the many that Mac users run in to on the internet. Most Mac users I know have this in their computers.

Thanks everyone for your replies it helped. I've moved over to a Shoutcast server and provided links for the five main players - Flash, WMP, Quicktime, Real, and WinAmp.

No reported problems from listeners with Mac's since.

Many thanks

Most Mac users connecting to my site are using Safari 17.0
