realPlayer just updated itself on my PC and when I launched a webcast stream, I noticed a red button in the lower left that allows you to rip the stream. I always thought ripper developers were hiding out on ships 12 miles offshore, given their piratical careers. I am sure my licensing arrangement does not allow for distribution of copyrighted material this way. I guess webcasting still remains a legal grey area in practice, with some serious companies like realPlayer taking a la-de-da attitude about DMCA law. Maybe putting a StreamRipper button on your player window is perfectly OK, but a no-no for any user who dares click it.

You know the DMCA basically turned 180 years of existing copyright law on its head, so it is a little difficult for me to shed a tear for the RIAA or the other corporatist mafia's who receive special protection under the bizarre rewrite of copyright under DMCA.

Just consider the brilliance of their massively effective royalty collection efforts as they relate to AM and FM radio, and how supremely fair they are in distributing an absolutely fair share of funds they nobly collect to young artists and foreign artists whose work is not published by labels owned by massive conglomerates.

I'd prefer not living under the false pretense that a stream is or should be unrecordable.

We need a LIKE or thumbs up button for sure.

Amazing how profitable a business can be when given special legislative protection and oversight via a govenrment "price control" agency.

I'm not sure if I'm not understanding the subtle irony or if you are serious about the royalty collection business being a good idea.
The US system might be a bit more fair for the artists than the one we have in Germany, but it's way more complicated and still the biggest winner is the recording companies who earn way too much for what they actually do these days.
The worst part however is their claims of monopoly.
