We have been broadcasting for about three weeks now at http://KWBC.fm. Our Chief Technology Officer says we should reboot our server every three days or so to prevent problems. Is this necessary? If it is true how do stations generally handle it that so listeners are not lost?

We are a professional station with over 4500 songs on our playlist.

Thanks for your help and opinions!

Some SAM users run their machines for months at a time without rebooting, and it's usually for some reason other than SAM. Some Windows updates will reboot the machine, but if you need to reboot that often then something is seriously wrong with the machine configuration.

And I can't help but observe that your CTO doesn't seem to have a lot of confidence in Windows.

Exactly. I’ve had Windows (2k) web servers running for > 3 years without a single reboot, and XP-based SAM stations being rebooted once or twice a year, usually for other reasons like software upgrades.

It’s all a thing of reliable hardware and professional software set-up.

Then again, if you run a professional station, you have a backup anyway that seamlessly takes over the stream if any irregularities occur.

Thank you both very much for your information. I felt this was the case. Thomas is a great CTO but he primarily works on our network and the 10 websites we operate. Our station manager has 9 years experience with Radio Station Automation and we have a new dedicated XP equipped computer on order. We will go with the computer we are now using for back-up
Thanks for your help!
