local server typically runs on port 3306

make sure you set a user name and password that you can remember because sam4 will require that info

You can try to run the mysqld.exe from the commandline to see what's wrong.
Should be in C:\Program Files (x86)\MySQL\MySQL Community Server 5.6\bin\mysqld.exe or something similar (if you got the x64 version of MySQL it will be in Program Files and the subdirectory structure might vary anyways, just make sure to run the mysqld.exe, mysql.exe is the commandline client and mysqld is the mysql-daemon/server)

Having had issues with clients who attempted to either install FireBird or incorrectly chose the wrong settings in MySQL, my recommendation would be to:

  1. Uninstall MySQL from Windows
  2. After uninstall, make sure to delete all MySQL folders residing on your hard drive.
  3. Shutdown --->Restart computer
  4. Reinstall MySQL
  5. Download the MySQL Workbench GUI for the non-nerdy :)
  6. Watch this video and follow the steps exactly (yes older version, but still gets the job done, each and every time.
  7. As suggested by Mastacheata, click the reconfigure SAM shortcut to connect to the database.
  8. Sit back, pour yourself an Irish coffee and bask in the rEVOLution that is SAM Broadcaster.
