I tried to upgrade MySQL, and then SAM wouldn't launch, and the new MySQL version wouldn't either. So, I did a System Restore. Now, neither SAM nor the old version of MySQL will launch.

How do I get MySQL to launch? Once this works, SAM should launch.

3. On Windows

Open Run Window by Winkey + R
Type services.msc
Search MySQL service based on version installed.
Click stop, start or restart the service option.

Or you can start/stop MySQL from the command prompt:

C:\> "C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 8.0\bin\mysqld"
C:\> "C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 8.0\bin\mysqladmin" -u root shutdown

This SO post has some possible solutions: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/475 ... tart-mysql
The accepted answer shows you how to find out more, but you can probably try the other suggestions in the non-accepted answers as well.
I'd suggest moving/renaming instead of deleting files, though.

The best thing at this point is just to tell SAM to forget MySQL, then change all my webpages and PLS files to simplify my stream. How do I get SAM to revert to operating without MySQL?

Find the reconfigure shortcut in your start menu or run `SAMBC.exe /reconfigure` from the commandline.
Then switch to Firebird and readd all your songs and event scheduler stuff.

Is Firebird necessary? Can't this be done with no additional program? Just naked SAM?

SAM needs a database to work. Information about the tracks, keeping track of the queue and playlists as well as all scheduling tasks rely on an SQL-format database. Also the Event Scheduler entries are stored in the database.

You can pick between Firebird (ships with SAM and runs without any configuration needed, but is not network accessible) or MySQL (good community support, works with the PHP templates and libraries for connecting to it are included in 90% of all commercial webhosts)

There are two more obscure solutions supported by SAM, but these only make sense if you already have them running or are at least familiar with them, because there's close to no support from the community and absolutely no support from Spacial for those.
These solutions are PostgreSQL and MS SQL aka SQL Server.

What version of SAM? SAM will self install Firebird unless told not to.

Since you are unwilling to give us the correct version of SAM, it's most likely 4.2.2 which is a cracked license version. It's no wonder you are having issues. You are using extremely out of date OS and SAM. MYSQL8 would never work on that OS. You could install 5.6. However I will discontinue working with you as of now.

Don't be so suspicious, my friend. It's a fully-paid subscription to 4.9.8. A couple of days ago, I pm'd you about issues with Spacial Tech Support. If you don't own a license, they won't even make excuses for not helping you!

OK, my bad. but VISTA? anyway, mysql 5.5 or 5.6 should work fine with that. However you may not be able to recover the updated database after the failed attempt at mysql8 even after a restore. I never attempted to try that and go back. You may have to start with a fresh install have you tried that?

You have two threads going at the same time I am locking this as you have now restarted with Firebird.
