My question is the Static Relay responsibility. When planning my listener count and stream format, I guess I need to know if the relay is handling all the bandwidth of connected listeners, or is it just forwarding the connection to me?
In a perfect situation with my limited bandwidth, my stream would hit the relay (my only traffic being my stream). Then the relay would allow listeners to connect to my stream and all the connections would be chewing up bandwidth on the other side of the relay instead of on my side of the relay. The Static Relay basically being a router for my stream. If this is how it works, then I should be ok. If not, and I have to supply the bandwidth for all the listener connections, then I might have issues. Thanks.

I don't think any of the long standing users of SAM who regularly visit this forum have ever used any of that.

In General, though: If you're not running the Shoutcast/Icecast server on your own machine, that server will be responsible for handling the bandwidth of your listeners. SAM => Shoutcast is only a single connection with whatever bandwidth you chose. If you run multiple different bitrates from SAM or broadcast to multiple streaming servers, that bandwidth multiplies, but is still limited to the number of encoders you configure in SAM and their respective bitrates.
(There's some minimal protocol overhead, so you should probably have at least 1.5x or better 2x the bitrate of your encoders combined as UPLOAD/UPSTREAM bandwidth on your internet connection)

i.e.: A single 64k AAC+ stream with 200 listeners on a hosted shoutcast server will only take up 64kbps of your personal upstream bandwidth (+ before mentioned overhead).


If you run the shoutcast server on your own machine (or any other computer in your home network on the same internet connection), you need to provide the upstream bandwidth for all of the 200 listeners (i.e.: 200x64 = 12800 kbps = 10 Mbps)
