Anyone know how to do this? I'm relatively well-versed in PAL, but really don't understand anything about meta data and sending tags to the server.

Quote:
one thing to add is that you can send meta data to your servers that will update the song title to whatever message you want..

So, for example, you can have a little text advertisement that the listener's client will receive as the current song artist/title. If you set this to appear every x seconds you will definately make it harder for ppl using the "auto file naming" features on the stream rippers.

Check out my Title Changer PAL.

Please note the current version uses random songs and effectively makes the metadata stream worthless.

@fester: Do you have a actual list of stream-ripper user-agents? I want to update my "ban stream-ripper" script...

The only ones I ban now are Streamripper and FreeAmp.

The others (sr-POSIX, RipCast, BASS, ThereMPEG, WinAmp, winamp, Zinf, Engelmann Media Radio Listener, Thingy, shoutcastsource, UnknownPlayer , Unknown) are being dealt with by random kicks and the PAL.
And they hate it.

Hey Festerhead, must we register to see the scripts?

Happy Broadcasting!

Can the script be configured to send a non modified metadata stream to Live365? I installed the script after registering at Festerhead sites. Nice work by the way! However since I also send a stream to Live365, I am wondering what is the work-around for this? I am using a regular ban_rippers.php and it has worked well on my SHOUTcast stream.

Happy Broadcasting!

No.
The script changes the song info playing within SAM and sends it to all connected encoders.

Thanks so much for the help!

I'm not sure if I'm willing to sacrifice all the title streaming right now though. I'm pretty sure my regulars would go nuts. How about if I change the script so it just adds extra junk to the end of the title every 3 minutes or so?

Go for it.
Change the two seconds configurables to minutes and alter the time wait assembler to use 'em.

I've seen messages about there not being disclaimers about streamripping not allowed....

Anyone seen a disclaimer like that to put on a site? Ya... it might not be a technical stopper, but it would at least have it posted and a way to start the argument of "I warned ya"

No way are we obligated to put a disclaimer like that up. No one should post something like that on their site. It need not be acknowledged. if they absolutely have to "tape" something off the station, they can do it the old fashioned way.

You are correct. You are not obligated. However, as most legal begals will tell you, it is better to post it in anticipation then to leave it empty. It is one more building block if and when a potential legal issue comes about. Not to mention some pretty good will can be established with your artists by demonstrating your will to protect their property.

You'll have to visit grammasporch.com to find out what I'm listening to. You probably never heard it or like it but, that's your problem. A former SVS member and a SAM user since 1999 or was that 1998? Getting too old to remember.

The legal issue that they can't use a streamripper? It's all right with me if they tape it, but I have the right to try and make it harder to separate the files so they can so easily be distributed on P2P.

Anyway, I'm still working on my version of the script. There are some codes you used that don't mean anything to me, and I'm having a hard time replacing them.

I'm not a huge believer in PAL yet. I think it makes sense for people who really want to help write programs for others, but for the average broadcaster it's way too much work to learn such a quirky programming language just so they can customize their stream. Writing the ones I already have running to add voice intros to the songs nearly killed me.

Okay, I finally figured this out and got this implemented. What it does is change the artist and title to 1 of 3 messages every 3 minutes. It displays that message for about 10 seconds, and then goes back to showing the artist and title playing. It could be easy to figure out and work around, except I don't think most of the stream-ripping programs are expecting such attempts to thwart them as of yet, and therefore are not equipped to deal with it.

Check it out if you like. Also, if anyone wants to test their streamrippers out on it and let me know how it works, I would appreciate it. Thanks.
