My SAM AGC presets:

Bypass All. :D :shock: :D :shock:

I have all of my processing on another machine that uses Sound Solution.
I've played with AGC in SAM some and it responds similarly. That might be a good place to start.

The best way I have found to set up audio processing without the use of signal and noise generators is to use a junk set of speakers. That's what most people have attached to their computers. My reference speakers are eight year old speakers that came with a 166mhz pc I had built in 1997. If you can make your audio sound decent on a junk set of speakers it's a pretty good bet that it will sound good on any set of speakers.

Adjust the processing as little as possible to achieve the sound you're looking for.

@ bubbahyde's post

I tried to do the same, using the cue out of SAM.
My sound was fine locally, but listeners told me
I had got much too much treble.

It sounds a lot more different if you re gonna stream the output
(especially using mp3pro) so it is better to have it streamed 1st
and then pick the sound from the caster once again,
preferrably with a different machine.

This way you really can be sure to hear what others will hear, too.
But: there is no more "realtime" behaviour, as the caster
will present any change you have made delayed
by commonly known buffer time :(

So, in the end, I also went on with "bypass all"....

I agree. I'm sorry I failed to mention it in my previous post. Definitely be listening to the stream to set things up.

I tried with bypass all and listened to the stream and it sounds so plain like a lot of internet radio, no processing. At least with AGC or even better Sound Solution, I get a more unique sound closer to FM radio instead of plain jane dry CD sound. But that dry CD sound is good if your playing a style of music that is highly processed already.

Using Sound Solution brings my CPU usage up too much for passed my comfort zone. So until I upgrade the server again, I'm sticking with AGC.

Still, the orginal post was about presets similar to what Sound Solution has. Anybody out there create presets yet or is there still an issue of preset working or not ?

Before posting my settings, I need to say that I know that I have 2 things working at the same time (Tomass Limiter & AGC), where I should only need 1. I've spent hours trying to find what sounds best and for some reason this seems to give the best sound.

My Tomass Limiter settings are:
GATE dB= -61
Limiters Overdrive%= 0
Process= 1/2 way between Hard & Soft
Low Attack msec= 31
High Attack msec= 20
LF Release msec= 1000
HF Release msec= 1000
Bass Depth%= 0
LF Band Link%= 0
NO CLIPPER
Expander Level= 0
Expander Depth=0

AGC Controls
Bypass All = Off
Pre-emphisis = On
50 microseconds selected
Gated AGC Stereo Expander and Bass EQ all selected with default settings
% Band processor left off - Everytime I try to use it my sound goes flat
Dual band processor and Clipper both on with default settings

Also I've disabled the equalizer under EQ. Trying to use it gave me some realy ugly sounds ranging from flat to distorted.

I better add that these settings were arived at while monitoring through iTunes and the Live365 player. The actual sound from the broadcast computer sounds very different.

If I could just get a smoother crossfade I'd be a happy camper :)

Thanks for those, but what preset we are talking about is at the top left there is a button to load presets. This pops up a window to load a series of presets. Apparently there was a bug in previous versions of SAM so loading presets couldn't work. Maybe this hasn't been fixed yet hence no presets for AGC such as Sound Solution has.

I am working on some AGC presets now. They are mainly for FM transmission so might not sound all that hot on the internet. I could certainly look into making some presets just for internet radio and see what you guys think of them?

Sound Solution had some nice FM presets for the style of music I play. The basic AGC and 5-band EQ improve the sound drastically, but I did like the resuts with some of S.S. presets. An audio engineer know just what to do to. Thanks for giving it a go. I frankly don't have time for trial and error, I'm too busy with other things.

If you are going for SS emulation perhaps naming them similar to SS presets would be a good start.

Hi

Ok here is our preset for our AGC. It is very simple and plain, nothing spectacular. Even though we have had quite a few comments how good our station sounds for a 32k and 64k stream, the plain and simple works for us.
Here is the link to the agc file. {AGC Config }
It will probably come up in your browser as one line of code. Copy and paste it to a plain text editor like notepad and save it to a file whateverulike.agc and place it in your SAM AGC folder. Make sure there are no changes to the config string.
Here is another link as a zip file. {AGC Config Zipped }

Remember I said this is a plain slightly tweaked AGC for our Jazz station.

Eventually we will have an Audio Engineer from the recording studio in our building take a look at this thing. Then maybe we will tweak it a bit more. If it sounds better then what we have now, I will post the results.

Before I forget.... The EQ, this will also make a difference.
Make the change to your Sam.eq.ini file then go to to your EQ section deck A/B and load the file name.
You can add this to the end of your SAM.EQ.INI file with a text editor such as notepad. Follow the way it is listed out. The setting we use is in Red. Also if you are skittish about editing the ini file just adjust the EQ settings to what we have and save the settings if you like it. Again slightly tweaked.

[Preset18]
Name=Techno
EQ0=30
EQ1=30
EQ2=0
EQ3=-30
EQ4=-20
EQ5=0
EQ6=20
EQ7=30
EQ8=30
EQ9=20
[Preset19]
Name=wcjz-073105 {name this to whateveruwant}
EQ0=0
EQ1=0
EQ2=0
EQ3=0
EQ4=0
EQ5=0
EQ6=16
EQ7=37
EQ8=47
EQ9=28
